The sound of shelling and constant warplanes engulfs Elena’s life and home. But before the assault against Ukraine had begun, Elena’s home was once filled with laughter and joy, with her precious grandchildren running throughout the house.
Shelling isn’t the only thing that has left holes in Elena’s life.
War displaced Elena and her family from her beloved community, only to return to homes severely damaged by conflict.
Upon speaking with our ReliefAid team in Ukraine, Elena tells us of her difficulties in recovering her life. Life is unstable, with the people of Elena’s region, Kharkiv, subjected to the constant fear of potential missile strikes:
No one knows what will happen.
Elena also explains that financial hardship has prevented her from renovating her house, which continues to leak throughout the harsh winter which in Kharkov, can drop to below -10°C. Coupled with heavy snowfall, the lack of access to gas supplies and electricity only increases the burden of life amidst conflict.

Rebuilding lives
Because of your support, ReliefAid can deliver aid directly to families like Elena’s, who are most in need. By providing basic necessities such as hygiene kits, food packages, shelter materials, clothing, and solar lamps, ReliefAid enables families to return to and rebuild their lives.
I really want there to be peace, for everything to be in order, and for people to return home.
