Umm Mohieddin’s Story

14 years of war has displaced over 13 million people who continue to face critical challenges.

After 14 years of war, which displaced over 13 million people and destroyed large parts of Syria’s infrastructure, the Syrian people continue to face critical challenges.

As Syria begins the journey of rebuilding and paving a way for a future of prosperity, millions of people continue to face food insecurity, continuing displacement, and poverty. What is also evident is the stalling of humanitarian support entering into the regions and communities most in need.

A life in ruins

Umm Mohieddin has been displaced on multiple occasions throughout the war since 2011. Originally from a town in northwestern Syria, she had lost her husband to the conflict and herself suffered a war injury, leaving her unable to work and earn income to support her four children (pictured above). She told our team that securing food and other necessities for her family has been extremely difficult.

Umm Mohideddin hopes for her and her family to return home to her town, rebuild the life that was taken from them and provide her and her children a better future. However, her community was subject to intense military strikes and chemical attacks, leaving Umm Mohideddin’s house in ruins.

It is difficult for families, like Umm Mohideddin’s, to imagine what comes next. Though she wishes to return, she tells us:

Our house is demolished and…we do not have the money to build a home to live in.

This is the reality for millions of displaced people in Syria. Though the war has ended and the Assad regime has fallen, places such as Aleppo, Idlib and countless other regions remain devastated. If this situation tells us anything, it is that the consequences of war do not disappear after the fall of its perpetrators. The missile strikes might stop, but the damage remains long after the last bomb.

The humanitarian crisis in Syria remains dire. The importance of providing the people of Syria with the resources they need to secure a better future has not reduced. The people of Syria are in need of attention and support more than ever.

Umm Mohieddin us of her recent experience in securing aid:

The support stopped…the camp here has become forgotten.
